About the TipTaeTip Challenge

A wise if slightly lazy man once said "there is no point re-inventing the wheel".

This philosphy allows you plenty of free information from the websites of those working on their trails, and the opportunity to ask those working on the ground your questions relating to their section of the TipTaeTip challenge.

Their contact details are within the table on the further information page. The larger trails may have temporary diversions mapped, as well as links to other information such as bothies, accommodation, guidebooks and maps, facilities and leaflets on their individual websites.

A couple of stretches, such as the one between Wanlockhead and New Lanark and the Glasgow Mural Trail do not have a trail manager, but information can be found within the TipTaeTip webpage to fill these gaps.

A Few Hints and Tips

Keeping the majority of the Scottish weather on your back instead of in your face is probably the best psychological decision you could make before setting off, so it's recommended that the Mull of Galloway on the Southern tip is the starting point for this simple reason.

The predominant weather comes in from the South West from the Atlantic Ocean. Contrary to popular belief, the sun can shine in Scotland, and if it is shining by walking South to North it won't be in your eyes and spoiling the dramatic landscapes in front of you.

The best time to walk the challenge is between April and September, which would allow a thru walker to finish before the worst of the Scottish winter weather strikes. The TipTaeTip is open all year round, however extra experience, determination and fitness levels will be required. There are many ways to complete the challenge. It doesn't need completed in one year. Different ways to complete the challenge are explained here. It may be easier to complete the challenge than you think.
