Setting Down the Challenge

PictureSouthern Upland Way, Near Dalry
Starting at the most Southerly point in South West Scotland at the Mull of Galloway, you will meet the Mull of Galloway Trail, twisting its way up the coastline until reaching the town of Stranraer.

At Stranraer you join the Southern Upland Way which is Scotland's longest waymarked trail. You will complete 100 of the total 214 miles of this Great Trail walking South West to North East, passing through some of Scotland's most remote land in Galloway, until reaching Wanlockhead which is Scotland's highest village. You can easily complete the Southern Upland Way in future years by returning to Sanquhar by train which is the town 8 miles West of Wanlockhead.

To reach your next long distance path from Wanlockhead you leave behind the Southern Upland Way and make a hill crossing on an non-waymarked path passing some of the village's derelict mining equipment on the Old Miners Path passing the Bay Mine. Up and over the hill you go until reaching the village of Crawfordjohn and Douglas along some of South Lanarkshire's Core Path Network. Pass under one of the busiest roads in Scotland, the M74, to make your way onto The Clyde Walkway at New Lanark.

PictureGlasgow Mural Trail
The Clyde Walkway takes you into the heart of Glasgow which is Scotland's largest and most cultural city. A slight detour off the Clyde Walkway takes you to see some of the Glasgow Mural Trail which is well worth a visit. You can check out the closest murals to the Clyde Walkway by following the downloadable GPX file, or spend a day having a look at the all. These massive murals were painted to celebrate historic figures and moments in the cities history, and you'll see 8 of the 20 murals without long diversions from the Clyde Walkway. Pop into the Glasgow Riverside Museum at the end of the Clyde Walkway to immerse yourself in the cities history, (free entry too), and is nice way to end your day or start your next in Glasgow.

From the Museum you then join The Kelvin Walkway which leads you around the city to the beginning of the West Highland Way, Scotland's most popular and well known long distance trail. You walk the complete length of this iconic trail passing Loch Lomond and through wild mountain lands.

Once you reach the end of the West Highland Way at Fort William the adventure continues.

Then you meet the beautiful Great Glen Way in Fort William which leads you to Inverness. Again you're doing the entire trail passing along the shores of Loch Ness, Scotland's most famous Loch. You will arrive in Inverness around 6 days later to join the last leg of the challenge on the John o' Groats Trail.

Unsurprisingly, this leads you to John o' Groats with stunning coastal and cliff top walking, however your journey isn't quite complete. John o' Groats isn't mainland Scotland's most northerly tip. It was just a suitable spot to commercialise upon the fact that you are getting close.  The award goes to
Dunnett Head, but you'll be pleased to hear that this is only a days walk away along the North Highland Way, and this short stint to the most Northerly point of mainland Scotland completes your mammoth TipTaeTip journey.

TipTaeTip is proudly working in partnership with The Walkers Club. You can also use their Free iOS and Android App developed to chart your progress along some of Scotland's Great Trails including the Southern Upland Way, Great Glen Trail and West Highland Way. Soon you will be able to use along the entire TipTaeTip Challenge. This means you can Journal your day by day adventures like an electronic diary, upload photos for others to see, as well as competing within a leader board which tracks your times and distances (for the competitive amongst you)!
